Organic chemistry
Topics and focal points
Internships, research and final theses in organic chemistry
For students of technical chemistry , organic chemistry forms the basis of the chemical industry, which you will get to know in its full range (basic and intermediate products, natural products, active pharmaceutical ingredients, plastics). Organic chemistry is also in demand on the path to a more sustainable future, e.g. in the development of alternative fuels, in the synthesis of packaging materials from renewable raw materials or in the search for new drugs. further entries
We providebiotechnology students with the key to understanding biochemical processes. How are nutrients converted into energy? How do plants generate sugar fromCO2? How is a vitamin formed and how can antibiotics such as penicillin be produced with the help of microorganisms? If you want to answer these questions, you need to know something about the structure and reactivity of organic molecules - and that's exactly what you'll learn here.
Equipment
During the practical course, you will be given your own laboratory space, an "experiment kit" containing everything you need for your experiments. You will then experiment independently during the practical course, with our support of course. For example, you will produce the active ingredient in the aspirin tablet, acetylsalicylic acid, recycle a PET water bottle or synthesize a preservative for food. Biotechnological processes such as fermentation with baker's yeast are also on the experimental schedule.
